How can I get my Black belt certificate?
all answers will be greatly appreciated. i will start with my background information. I am currently a junior black belt in taekwondo. i have spent two years, and lots of money here in the united states. Taekwondo in the united states is more of a business. especially in my area where it’s ALL about money. It’s more of a joke here than anything. I am of korean descent and the dojang i go to really shames me because anyone who has the time and money can become black belt! they add extra unneccessary belts so you spend more money on the contracts and on the belts. there are 13 belts at my school and each belt testing is about 150 dollars and you MUST sign a contract for a year and pay 92 dollars a month. that’s about 1200 dollars for a yearly contract! I’ve spent 3 years already and my belt testing for black is next month. But now i am fed up with it. my grandmaster is a nice guy, but he’s greedy to ask for this much money! my contract ends next month and my belt testing is next month if i choose to pay. WHAT SHOULD I DO? The blackbelt testing is 550 dollars and my contract is nearly up so i have to pay another 1200 dollars for a year’s worth. should i continue and waste all that money or is there another way to get an official taekwondo certificate without paying so much?????????? PLEASEEEEE HELPPP
Wow. I’ve never had that experience before. In my school you only have to pay $30 for each belt. And the monthly price of $30. If you look around at other schools and find one with better prices, then you can ask them if you could just test for your black belt there. So you would have one certificate with the new school and all your others with your old one so I don’t know if that would work. But you could show them all of your certificates and see if after testing you they could give you your black belt. After being there for a while and the month’s money and you might (after you have discussed it with the instructor) hang around long enough to get to know everyone and then test. Good luck!!

What I don’t understand is, that you understand that TKD is a sham thats in it for the money, and yet you still want a black belt from them!? It doesn’t mean anything!!!! You won’t know how to defend yourself, and your pockets will be empty. If you want a black belt/certificate so bad, go buy a black belt at sears and a certificate on ebay all for about $15

I would have quit long ago. Your belt is only as good as the school you get it in and clearly your dojang is a joke. Why in the world are you still there if you know it is a joke? Tell them you are not renewing and are sick of the money aspect. Tell them you are not interested in being a black belt in another mcdojo. Walk out the door and find a real school.
The black belt you will get will be worthless anyway in the real martial arts world so why waste anymore time and money there. Just walk away.

You already that his school is a mcdojo (mcdojang in this case).
Why would you want a black belt in a macdojang? It’s like paying thousands of dollars for a car without an engine.
Leave this school and join one where they train for real.

Yeah, why get a certificate of rank from an organization that you don’t respect? Go somewhere else (cough, different system, cough) and get on with your training. Whatever you have accomplished so far will help you develop and progress as a martial artist so don’t think of it as wasted time. Just keep at it.

I would quit if I were you. Even if what you’re learning was originally taekwondo, I don’t think that where you are learning will effectively teach you anything. In a place where they care more about money than anything, I can’t say that they’d feel enough concern to correct your mistakes or teach you where you’re lacking. At most, they’d probably just teach you how to look better so that it looks like you’ve learnt real martial arts. A martial arts teacher has to care for his/her students if they’re going to teach anything effectively.
I would really just quit and find a better school. In Australia, we really don’t have that many McDojos or McDojangs so it wasn’t a problem for me to find a good martial arts place (actually, my master teaches me for free). I’d suggest you look around on the net for ways to spot a McDojo/jang and find yourself a place where you will actually learn. A place where you gain rankings through money and contracts, rather than skill, will teach you "how to waste money" more anything else, like martial arts.
